In early March 2014, Erik and his father Charlie returned once again to Moore Haven, Florida, for another hog hunting trip at Chappy’s Outfitters. This outing brought together a new group of friends, making the trip both a hunting adventure and a chance for camaraderie in the outdoors.

The group consisted of nine hunters in total. Some were seasoned hunters with plenty of experience in the field, while others were participating in their first hog hunt. Most of the group traveled from South Florida, but one dedicated participant even drove down from South Carolina to join the trip. It was a diverse mix of backgrounds and experience levels, which added to the excitement of the hunt.

The morning started out chilly and foggy, a typical early spring condition around the Lake Okeechobee region. Visibility across the fields and wooded areas was limited at first, creating a quiet and almost surreal atmosphere as the hunters settled into their stands. One of the photos from the hunt captures this moment well, showing the fog rolling across the landscape from the perspective of one of the stands.

As the morning progressed, the fog slowly lifted and temperatures warmed, making for more comfortable hunting conditions. The group spread out across the property and worked the surrounding areas where hogs are known to travel and feed.

Like many hunting trips, the experience was about much more than the harvest itself. For some members of the group it was their first introduction to hog hunting in Florida, while others were returning to familiar territory. By the end of the day, everyone had a good time, shared plenty of stories, and enjoyed a successful outing in the Florida outdoors.

Florida Hog Hunting at Moore Haven

Why is Moore Haven a well-known hog hunting area?

Moore Haven is located near the southern edge of Lake Okeechobee and offers ideal habitat for feral hogs. The area’s mixture of farmland, wetlands, oak hammocks, and dense brush provides food sources and cover that allow hog populations to thrive throughout the region.

Is hog hunting good in early spring in Florida?

Yes. Early spring can be a productive time for hog hunting in Florida. Cooler morning temperatures and mild daytime conditions often encourage animal movement, especially around feeding areas and travel corridors.

Can beginners participate in a hog hunt?

Absolutely. Many guided hunts welcome both experienced hunters and first-time participants. Outfitters often help with stand placement, safety guidance, and general hunting strategy, making it a good introduction for those new to hunting.

Why do hunters often travel long distances for hog hunts?

Feral hog populations are widespread in parts of the southern United States, and areas like Florida offer year-round opportunities. Hunters frequently travel to regions known for strong hog populations and experienced outfitters to increase their chances of a successful and memorable hunt.
