Erik and a group of friends once again made the trip to Moore Haven, Florida, for another hog hunting adventure with Chappy’s Outfitters. This time the crew arrived in style, traveling together in a large RV that served as both transportation and base camp for the weekend. Hunting trips like these are often as much about the experience and camaraderie as they are about the hunt itself.
South Florida’s summer weather, however, can be unpredictable. Rainstorms rolled through the area throughout the trip, forcing the group to plan their hunts carefully around the changing conditions. Fortunately, between the storms they were able to fit in both an evening hunt and a morning hunt, making the most of the short windows of opportunity.
The Moore Haven area, near Lake Okeechobee, is well known for its healthy feral hog population. The mix of wetlands, farmland, and thick brush provides ideal habitat and feeding areas for wild hogs, which is one of the reasons the region remains a popular hunting destination year-round.
Despite the challenging weather, the trip proved successful. By the end of the hunt the group had harvested several hogs, ensuring that there would be plenty of pork to bring home. As the photos from the trip show, it was another memorable outing filled with good company, challenging conditions, and a productive hunt.
Hog Hunting in South Florida
Why is Moore Haven a popular location for hog hunting?
Moore Haven sits near the southern edge of Lake Okeechobee, an area that provides excellent habitat for feral hogs. The combination of wetlands, dense brush, and nearby agricultural land offers abundant food sources and cover, allowing hog populations to thrive throughout the region.
Can feral hogs be hunted year-round in Florida?
Yes. On private land in Florida, feral hogs can typically be hunted year-round with landowner permission. Because they are considered an invasive species, hunting is one of the primary ways their population is managed.
How does summer weather affect hog hunting in Florida?
Summer hunts in Florida often involve heat, humidity, and frequent rainstorms. These conditions can limit daytime activity and require hunters to plan around weather patterns. Early morning and evening hunts are often the most productive during the warmer months.
What should hunters expect on a Florida hog hunt?
Florida hog hunts often involve moving through dense vegetation, swamp edges, or open pasture areas where hogs feed. Hunters should be prepared for warm weather, changing terrain, and animals that can move quickly through thick cover. Proper preparation and awareness of surroundings are essential for a successful hunt.
