Erik and a group of friends kicked off the new year with a hog hunting trip to Moore Haven, Florida, through Chappy’s Outfitters. The trip had an extra special meaning this time, as Erik’s father, Charlie, joined the hunt as part of his 75th birthday celebration. Spending time outdoors together made the weekend even more memorable.
January in South Florida can bring cooler temperatures, and this particular weekend proved chilly by local standards. Even so, the cooler weather made for comfortable hunting conditions, especially during the early morning hours when feral hogs are often most active.
The group spread out across the property and settled into their stands, watching the trails and feeding areas where hogs are known to move. Moore Haven, located near Lake Okeechobee, provides excellent habitat for feral hogs thanks to its mix of farmland, wetlands, and dense brush.
Despite the cool conditions, the hunt proved to be a successful outing. By the end of the weekend, everyone in the group had the opportunity to experience the hunt’s excitement and bring home a harvest. Celebrating a milestone birthday in the outdoors with family and friends made the trip especially rewarding.
Below are a few photos from that day capturing moments from the hunt and the memories made along the way.
Florida Hog Hunting Experiences
Why is January a good time for hog hunting in Florida?
January often brings cooler temperatures to South Florida, which can make daytime hunting more comfortable. Cooler weather can also encourage animal movement during daylight hours, increasing the chances of spotting hogs during a hunt.
Are hog hunts suitable for hunters of all ages?
Yes. Guided hog hunts can accommodate hunters of many ages and experience levels. Outfitters typically provide guidance on stand placement and safety procedures, making the experience accessible to both seasoned hunters and newcomers.
Why are feral hogs hunted in Florida?
Feral hogs are considered an invasive species and can cause significant damage to farmland, natural habitats, and native wildlife. Hunting helps control the population while providing an opportunity for hunters to harvest wild pork.
What makes a guided hog hunt appealing to groups?
Guided hunts allow groups of friends or family members to enjoy the outdoors together while benefiting from the experience of local outfitters who know the terrain and animal patterns. This often increases the chances of a successful hunt and makes the overall experience more enjoyable.
